VoLTE
VoLTE is Voice over LTE. It is an IP data transmission technology that does not require a 2G/3G network. All services are carried on the 4G network, which can realize the unification of data and voice services under the same network. In other words, 4G networks not only provide high-speed data services, but also provide high-quality audio and video calls. The latter requires VoLTE technology to achieve.
VoLTE is fundamentally different from 2G and 3G voice calls. VoLTE is an end-to-end voice solution based on all-IP conditions on the 4G network. Compared with 2G and 3G voice calls, VoLTE can improve voice quality by about 40% because it uses high-resolution coding technology. VoLTE brings lower access latency (waiting time after dialing), which is 50% lower than 3G, about 2 seconds, while it was 6-7 seconds in the 2G era. In addition, the call drop rate under 2G and 3G occurs from time to time, but the call drop rate of VoLTE is close to zero.
VoNR
VoNR refers to voice calls using the 5G SA network. The call effect and reliability of VoNR are the same as VoLTE, and the time to make a call is about the same as VoLTE. Generally speaking, the improvement of VoNR compared to VoLTE is not obvious.
The carrier required for VoNR is the 5G SA network. Currently, the 5G SA networks of various operators have not yet been fully popularized, and Xiaomi smartphones are also being tested and adapted.
Because the carrier required for VoNR is the 5G SA network, mobile phones that do not support the 5G SA network must not support VoNR. However, mobile phones that support 5G SA networks may not necessarily support VoNR, and require software adaptation to support them.
VoNR is the underlying capability of the mobile phone. When the conditions are met, the mobile phone will automatically enable it and there will be no obvious perception when using the mobile phone.
