Share Me FAQ

About ShareMe
ShareMe was originally a built-in feature of MIUI, and got its own Home screen icon after an update in November of 2017. ShareMe can transfer almost all types of files between devices without connecting to the internet at speeds almost 200 times faster than Bluetooth. Its UI is crisp and clear, and it's consistently stable.

1.Q:What should I do if ShareMe crashes?
A:ShareMe may crash if a critical error occurs. In such cases, clearing app data and relaunching the app might be a good idea.

Connection issues

1.Q: Why does ShareMe need both a Wi-Fi hotspot & Bluetooth?
A:1. ShareMe uses Wi-Fi hotspots and Bluetooth to send and receive files. After a transfer is complete, Wi-Fi hotspot is turned off automatically. Make sure your device supports "Portable hotspot" functionality before you start transferring files.
2.Keeping Bluetooth on doesn't affect battery usage. ShareMe needs Bluetooth to find nearby devices faster.

2.Q: What do I do if I can't find sender/receiver or can't connect?
A:Here are a few things to check:
1. Make sure both devices allowed ShareMe to access their location.
2. Make sure both devices support "Portable hotspot" functionality.
3. Make sure that Wi-Fi hotspots on both devices have been turned on successfully. If not, see "My Wi-Fi hotspot won't turn on. What should I do?".
After this, relaunch ShareMe and try to connect again.
Here's what else you can try if you still can't connect:
1. Bring the two devices closer to each other. Maybe they are too far apart.
2. Move to a different physical location.
3. Try switching roles with your counterpart and send a file instead of receiving, and see if you can connect then.

3. Q:My Wi-Fi hotspot won't turn on. What should I do?
A:1. Make sure both devices support "Portable hotspot" functionality. You can find this item in the Settings.
2. Compatibility issues with some devices exist which make the process of turning Wi-Fi hotspot on longer. Try relaunching ShareMe.
3. Try switching roles with your counterpart and send a file instead of receiving, and see if you can connect then.

4.Q: I'm a sender and I can't connect to the receiver's device after tapping the profile photo. What should I do?
A:This usually happens because of unstable networks or compatibility issues. Try these:
1. Exit ShareMe on both devices, launch again, then try to connect.
2. If this doesn't help, contact us at mi-shareme@xiaomi.com and describe your issue.

5.Q: Why does ShareMe turn on Bluetooth automatically during transfers?
A:ShareMe needs Bluetooth to find nearby devices faster. ShareMe turns off Bluetooth automatically after a transfer is complete.

6. Q:Other reasons why you may not be able to connect
A:Whenever a VPN connection is established, a device won't be able to turn on Wi-Fi hotspot. Turn off VPN and try to connect again.

Issues with transfers

1. Q:Transfer speed is too low.
A:1. Make sure the two devices are close to each other. The closer they are, the faster the speed gets.
2. Presence of multiple Wi-Fi hotspots nearby may create network interference and slow transfers down. Transfer files in places with simple network environment.
3. You can also stop background processes on your device to boost transfer speed. When apps connect to the internet in the background, transfer speed decreases.

2. Q:What should I do if my transfers are interrupted?
A:1. If the ongoing transfer is interrupted, tap "Connect again". After the connection between devices is established, resume the transfer.
2. If Wi-Fi signal of your hotspot isn't stable, move to a location with less network interference.
3. If your transfer gets interrupted 3-5 times in a row, reboot your device and relaunch ShareMe. If this doesn't help, contact us at mi-shareme@xiaomi.com and describe your issue.

3.Q: How do I transfer files to a computer?
A:1. Open the ShareMe app on your phone and tap the button in the upper left corner.
2. Tap "Connect to computer".
3. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and tap "Start".
4. Enter the FTP address which appeared in the app into the address bar of your browser or file manager on your computer.
5. You'll see the files from your phone on your computer's screen. Select the files you need and proceed to download.
Note:
1. Make sure both your phone and computer are connected to the same network. Files can't be transferred when devices are connected to different networks.
2. Don't close ShareMe on your phone while files are being transferred. Don't leave the transfer page to avoid interruptions.

4. Q:Can I place ShareMe in the background during transfers?
A:Normally, short transfers aren't interrupted when you place ShareMe in the background. However, your phone's OS may stop background processes for the apps that have been in the background for a long time. To avoid such situations, keep ShareMe in the foreground when you transfer files.

5. Q:What do I do if I can't find files I need to transfer?
A:1. Photos and videos that have just been taken may appear in ShareMe with a delay. If you think that's the case, wait a minute or two, then reboot your device and relaunch ShareMe.
2.Make sure the files you need are stored either in the internal storage or on the SD card. You can view the files stored in these two locations by tapping Send > Files. There you can switch between internal storage and SD card in the upper part of the screen.

6. Q:Can I use ShareMe on a tablet?
A:Not right now. We're working on adding tablet options (only tablets with "Personal hotspot" functionality will be supported). Meanwhile, you can use ShareMe on Android phones and computers.

7. Q:Will my Wi-Fi hotspot name go back to normal after the transfer?
A:1. Your original Wi-Fi hotspot name will be restored after the transfer only if you tap "Disconnect", and then exit ShareMe.
2. If you leave ShareMe right after the transfer and clear cache, there won't be enough time for the OS to switch back to the original name.

Storage issues

1. Q:Where are the files I receive stored?
A:ShareMe saves received files to the MIUI/ShareMe folder by default. If you still can't find the files you received, see the next answer.

2. Q:I can't find the files I received. What should I do?
A:You can view all received files after you tap "Received files" on ShareMe's start page. You can also view received files in the corresponding system apps (e.g., Gallery, File Manager).
Case 1: Can't find the files I've just received.
In some cases, the files you just received may appear in ShareMe with a delay. Wait a minute or two, reboot your phone, and take another look.
Case 2: Can't find the files I received some time ago.
1. Cleaner might have mistaken the files you'd received for trash and deleted them.
2. If you switched default storage spaces in ShareMe, go back to the original one, your files might be there.

3. Q:The path all files are saved to is too long. Is there a shorter one?
A:ShareMe saves files to the Internal storage/MIUI/ShareMe folder. We're currently working on solutions that might shorten this path. If you have any suggestions, feel free to drop us a line to mi-shareme@xiaomi.com!
